90 rescued cats and kittens, majority polydactyl, are now ready for adoption

There are 90 cats — out of 124 rescued from an overcrowding situation in Fullerton earlier this month — ready for a new home, OC Animal Care officials said.

The cats are available for adoption at the OC Animal Care shelter in Tustin.

A unique feature shared by many of the cats, which range from 4 months to 3 years of age, is that they are polydactyl, said OC Animal Control spokesperson Jackie Pratt.

“They look like they’re wearing little mittens because they have extra toes,” she said.

The cats were recovered by animal control officers after the agency received an alert from a neighbor concerned for the animal’s welfare. Pratt said a majority of the cats up for adoption share the polydactyl trait, usually a recessive gene, which likely became dominant due to inbreeding.

“They’re very friendly, personable and quick to warm up. They love to be touched and pet by people,” said Pratt, who noted that in most overcrowding cases, cats are usually afraid of people and won’t come forward or interact.

Of the 124 cats rescued, some of the kittens are less than 8 weeks old. They will be fostered and bottle-fed until they are old enough to be put up for adoption.
