Newport Harbor, Corona del Mar and Laguna Beach captured tournaments on Saturday to generate speed for the CIF-SS upcoming playoffs.

Newport Harbor defended its title at the North-South Challenge with a 15-10 victory against Cathedral Catholic in the championship match at Sacred Heart Prep in Atherton.

Stanford commits Connor Ohl and Kai Kaneko each scored three goals to lead Newport Harbor (24-1), which defeated Cathedral Catholic for the fourth time in five matches this season.

The reigning CIF-SS Open Division champion beat the Dons in the finals of the three top tournaments — South Coast, Elite 8 and North-South Challenge — and split a pair of nonleague matches.

In the semifinals, Newport Harbor edged Miramonte 6-5 on a goal by Ohl with three minutes left in regulation.

Newport Harbor became only the third program to defend its title at the North-South Challenge.

Corona del Mar defeated Long Beach Wilson 13-9 in the finals of the Memorial Cup in San Jose.

William Weir had six goals and four steals and Nathan Simoncelli added three goals to lead Sea Kings (21-6).

At the Steve Pal tournament, Laguna Beach beat San Marcos 22-16 in a high-scoring final in the Kimbell Division at San Juan Hills. Senior Dylan Williams netted nine goals to lead the Breakers (22-6).

In the first round, Laguna Beach edged host San Juan Hills 15-14 behind six goals by Williams and 15 saves from Max Jakle.

The section playoff pairings are scheduled to be released Friday at 2 p.m.
