An Orange County sheriff’s deputy searching for a felony suspect shot that person during a confrontation in Lake Forest on Thursday afternoon, Aug. 7, authorities said.
Earlier in the day, deputies were notified of a domestic problem that had taken place in Lake Forest the day before, sheriff’s Sgt. Gerard McCann said. They later located the suspect near El Toro Road and Trabuco Road around 3 p.m. While attempting to arrest him, a deputy shot the man.
Authorities did not immediately release details about the domestic incident, or what led up to the police shooting on Thursday. A handgun was found at the scene of the shooting, but the suspect did not fire at deputies, McCann said. A bullet hole was visible in the front window of a nearby Postal Annex.
The suspect was taken to the hospital, where he was undergoing surgery as of 6:30 p.m., McCann said.
A deputy on scene was also taken to the hospital after being bitten by a police K-9 during the incident. The bite was unrelated to the confrontation, and it was unclear what caused the dog to react, McCann said.
