A police officer was critically injured in Garden Grove Sunday morning when he was struck by a car during a foot pursuit of someone suspected of assault with a deadly weapon, authorities said.
Around 12:05 a.m. Sunday, officers were in the area of Brookhurst Street and Stanford Avenue investigating an call about a deadly weapon assault when they attempted to detain a man allegedly armed with a knife, who was involved in an altercation, according to a Garden Grove Police Department statement.
The suspect ignored officers’ commands, triggering a foot pursuit.
The officer was then struck by an unrelated car that was traveling on Brookhurst Street.
Paramedics rushed the officer, in critical condition, to a hospital. The driver whose vehicle struck the officer remained on scene and was cooperative, Garden Grove police spokesperson Nick Jensen said. The driver was not cited or arrested.
The officer was in critical condition as of Sunday afternoon.
The suspect, who fled, was caught and taken into custody.
No other information was immediately available.
