Crean Lutheran boys basketball too big, too strong for Canyon https://www.ocregister.com/2026/01/06/crean-lutheran-boys-basketball-team-too-big-too-strong-for-canyon/ Wed, 07 Jan 2026 07:05:38 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=11341848&preview=true&preview_id=11341848

IRVINE – Shorthanded, yet too tall.

Crean Lutheran’s boys basketball team played Tuesday night without 6-foot-7 forward Jacob Majok, but the Saints did have 6-11 Chadrack Mpoyi.

Mpoyi scored 25 points, many of those on gym-shaking dunks, as Crean Lutheran overwhelmed visiting Canyon 80-54 in the Crestview League opener for both teams.

Crean Lutheran, No. 2 in the Orange County Top 25, improved to 15-5 overall. No. 6 Canyon is 11-7.

Majok, a 6-7 senior who signed with UC Riverside, did not play because he is recovering from an ankle injury.

As Mpoyi said, Majok, who averages nine points and seven rebounds a game, is not easily replaced.

“Jacob was our MVP last year,” said Mpoyi, who signed with Minnesota. “He’s our leader, our captain.”

Mpoyi and 6-3 junior guard Hunter Caplan took charge in Majok’s absence.

Mpoyi shot 12 of 15 from the floor – one of his misses was a 3-point attempt – and Caplan was 6 of 7 on 3-pointers for 20 points. Caplan also had six assists.

Crean Lutheran’s Nick Giarrusso, a 6-5 junior wing, had nine rebounds and 10 assists. Saints senior Will Malual scored nine points with seven rebounds and also was a forceful defensive presence.

Crean’s quick inside-outside offense kept Canyon defenders scrambling.

“That was our focus for this game,” Mpoyi said.

Crean Lutheran dominated early. Taking advantage of Canyon’s seven turnovers in the first quarter, the Saints flew to a 21-1 lead. They took a 23-5 advantage into the second quarter.

Canyon is famous for its spirit, so of course the Comanches cut into their deficit. They outscored Crean 23-17 over a period that started in the first quarter and carried over into the second quarter. They trimmed the Saints’ lead to 11 points, but could not get closer.

The score was 38-24 at halftime.

In the third quarter Mpoyi, who averages 14 points a game, scored 11 points and Caplan made a pair of 3s to keep Crean Lutheran comfortably ahead. It was 59-40 going into the fourth quarter.

The Saints stretched the lead to 30 points in the final quarter.

Caplan, who averages 16 points a game, said getting Mpoyi more involved is a growing emphasis for Crean’s offensive structure. And, Caplan added, Mpoyi can offer more for the team.

“Even when he’s not scoring,” Caplan said, “just his impact of being here on the court. You see the dunks, his rebounding. And his defense, that’s another story.

“He makes all of our jobs way easier.”

The CIF Southern Section computer-created power rankings, which will determine the teams for each playoff division at the end of the regular season, have Crean Lutheran at No. 8 overall. Last season, the top 10 teams in the rankings were placed in the Open Division.

Canyon is No. 45 in the CIF-SS power rankings.

Senior guard Tate Dohrmann led Canyon with 15 points.

Crean Lutheran’s next game is a league game Friday at La Habra.

Canyon’s next game is a league game Friday at Foothill.

Also coming up for Canyon is a nonleague game at Intuit Dome on Monday against Esperanza.

Tustin boys basketball missing key player but still too strong for Calvary Chapel https://www.ocregister.com/2026/01/06/tustin-boys-basketball-missing-key-player-but-still-too-strong-for-calvary-chapel/ Wed, 07 Jan 2026 06:43:05 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=11341814&preview=true&preview_id=11341814 TUSTIN — The Tustin boys basketball team used a balanced effort to defeat Calvary Chapel 64-52 in an Empire League game Tuesday night at Tustin High.

The Tillers (12-10, 2-0) had four players score in double figures.

Point guard Peyton Montha had a team-high 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Brannon Hampton had 11 points and 13 rebounds, John Gonzalez also had 11 points and Felix Alcazar came off the bench to score 10 points.

Tustin coach Jonathan Antolin was proud of his team’s effort, especially without one of its best players. Taven Epps, who is also a standout football player at Tustin, missed the game to play in the Navy All-American Bowl later this week.

“You know, we didn’t have our big guy (Epps) in the middle and when you take him off the floor, we’re a completely different team,” Antolin said. “So I thought we did a really good job rebounding today and did a really good job executing today.”

Montha connected on a trio of shots from behind the arc in the second quarter, as the junior point guard did his best Steph Curry impression to help the Tillers to a 33-26 halftime advantage over the Eagles (12-7, 1-1).

“Yeah, and the thing about those 3-pointers, they were super late in the shot clock, right?” Antolin said. “The shot clock was winding down, so when you have a guy that can go make plays, it makes the game a little bit easier. Lots of growth with him down the stretch and him managing that game.”

Tustin’s depth was on display as players took turns making an impact. In the third quarter Alcazar scored nine of his 10 points. As Calvary Chapel chipped away at its deficit in the fourth, it was Dillon Walker who scored eight points for the Tillers in the final quarter.

“We’re pretty deep. You know, we’ve got guys that can score the ball,” Antolin said. “I thought we did a really good job of finding really good shots down the stretch.”

Calvary Chapel’s Ephraim Coffin led all scorers with 16 points. Kaden Harris added nine points while Jon Schoening collected 12 rebounds and three blocks for the Eagles.

Calvary Chapel will be without the services of coach O’Shae Williams for the remainder of the season. Norm Follosco has taken the helm.

Follosco was given notice by athletic director Jack McInally toward the end of The Classic at Damien in late December that he would take over for Williams with help from coach Craig Coffin.

Follosco laid out his goals for his team as it battles for the league title.

“Just basically grow every single game,” Follosco said. “We’re gonna grow, we’re gonna get better. We’re gonna look at film, we’re gonna look at our weak tendencies and try to improve upon that.”

Beckman’s girls basketball team sank a season-high 11 3-pointers — all in the first three quarters — and defeated host San Clemente 59-45 in the teams’ South Coast League opener Tuesday.

The Patriots (13-4, 1-0), ranked No. 8 in Orange County, made seven shots from beyond the arc in the first half as they took a 31-22 lead in their South Coast League debut.

Jeanette Fabella and Aksharaa Prakaschander opened the third period with consecutive 3-pointers to force a timeout by No. 11 San Clemente (8-9, 0-1), the defending league champion.

Beckman made four of its six attempts from beyond the arc in the third to lead by as many as 16 points in the quarter.

Natasha Jafari made all four of her 3-point attempts en route to a game-high 21 points for the Patriots.

The senior finished 7 for 12 from the floor and added 10 rebounds and three steals.

Prakaschander and Fabella each added a pair of baskets from beyond the arc and finished with 14 and seven points, respectively.

Beckman made 11 of 21 of its 3-pointers (52 percent) and recorded 12 assists, including six by Taylor Tam.

Izzy Sims sank three of the San Clemente’s five 3-pointers for all nine of her points. The junior also had 10 rebounds and two blocks.

Kiley Husbands scored 10 of her team-high 13 points in the first half.

Beckman plays host to San Juan Hills — another team known for its 3-pointer shooting — on Thursday.

The closure affects sections of the trail between Yorba Ranch Road and Dominguez Ranch Road, city officials said in a post on X.

There is currently no estimated date for reopening, and repairs are expected to take several months. City officials said the collapse did not impact nearby homes.

The west side of the greenbelt remains open, though the public is advised to use caution when accessing the area.

Repair work will be coordinated by the County of Orange, owner and operator of the channel, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available, the city said.

Erik Terry resigns as Northwood’s football coach after one season https://www.ocregister.com/2026/01/06/northwood-football-coach-erik-terry-resigns-after-one-season/ Wed, 07 Jan 2026 01:22:24 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=11341520&preview=true&preview_id=11341520 Support our high school sports coverage by becoming a digital subscriber. Subscribe now

Northwood football coach Erik Terry has resigned after one season for family reasons, he confirmed Tuesday.

Terry said will he continue as co-athletic director at the Irvine Unified school.

This past season, Northwood finished 4-6, including a 1-4 in the Foxtrot League, and missed the playoffs.

Three players earned first-team, all-league honors. They were defensive linemen Jacob Harper and Xayn Ali and athlete Jack Schultz.

Quarterback Dylan D’Epifanio was among Northwood’s second-team, all-league selections. The sophomore has since withdrawn from the school, Terry said.

Terry’s coaching staff included several former head coaches, including Stephen Barbee.

Barbee, who coached defensive backs, arrived after a successful, seven-year run at Long Beach Poly. He led the Jackrabbits to a CIF title, a feat he also achieved at St. Margaret’s.

Terry replaced J.C. Clarke, who also served as an assistant last season. Clarke guided Northwood to consecutive CIF-SS titles and a CIF State runner-up finish.

In the 2026-27 league cycle in Orange County, Northwood drops one league to the Iota League. The new-look Iota also includes Cypress, Kennedy, Laguna Hills, Marina and Pacifica.

Angel Stadium field turned into dirt racing track https://www.ocregister.com/2026/01/06/angel-stadium-field-turned-into-dirt-racing-track/ Tue, 06 Jan 2026 23:06:03 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=11341188&preview=true&preview_id=11341188 Before the lucious green outfield is shaped and manicured for the upcoming baseball season in Anaheim, it is being transformed by crews this week into a dirt pit.

Angel Stadium traditionally hosts AMA Monster Energy Supercross and Monster Jam events in January and February — a rip-roaring couple of weeks that require some 500 truckloads of dirt to be hauled in to cover the field of the stadium, with mounds formed to create giant ramps for the riders and drivers.

The rest of the year, the 5,500 cubic yards of dirt are kept nearby and used for employee parking.

Supercross motorcycles will kick off their off-road racing season at the stadium on Saturday, Jan. 10. The high-octane event starts with a FanFest from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fans can get autographs and watch as the teams prepare. The main racing starts after an opening ceremony at 3:30 p.m.

Monster Jam’s over-sized trucks will wheel into town for shows Jan.17-18, Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, and Feb. 21-22. It also offers a pit party; find out more at monsterjam.com.

Supercross will be back in Anaheim for more racing on Jan. 24; find out more at supercrosslive.com.

Mater Dei’s Kaeli Wynn stays positive after season-ending surgery https://www.ocregister.com/2026/01/06/mater-deis-kaeli-wynn-stays-positive-after-season-ending-surgery/ Tue, 06 Jan 2026 21:33:25 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=11340938&preview=true&preview_id=11340938 Support our high school sports coverage by becoming a digital subscriber. Subscribe now

Mater Dei’s Kaeli Wynn smiled and chatted with well-wishers as she left the Meruelo Athletic Center on crutches and her leg in a stiff brace.

The South Carolina basketball signee held her head high Saturday after the Matt Denning Hoops Classic as she discussed her recovery from a Dec. 3 surgery that wiped out her senior season.

“I have a lot of positivity in me,” Wynn said. “This is just my path. I’ve had a lot of time to accept that. Obviously, behind closed doors, I might be a little different and there were some days where they weren’t my brightest but that just comes with it.”

“I’m just taking it one day at a time,” she added. “And that’s the only thing that I can do is continue to work forward for my future, and that’s the only thing I want to think of. Dwelling on the past won’t help me. Dwelling on my situation won’t help me, won’t help my teammates. I try to stay as strong as possible for them but some days it’s really hard.”

“The first couple games, when (I was) walking out and (thought), ‘I’m never going to put on my uniform this year. Never going to put my shoes on. Never going to warm up.’ Those kind of thoughts came through my head.”

Wynn, a 6-foot-1 forward and two-time first-team All-County forward, suffered a dislocated kneecap late last season. She said she underwent surgery on Dec. 3 to reconstruct a ligament on the side of her knee. The procedure, she said, included an adjustment of her tibia to help her knee.

Buoyed by her Christian faith and the support of family and friends, Wynn is eagerly looking forward to beginning physical therapy later this month. Her goal is to play as a freshman next season at South Carolina.

“I just got to get in rehab and get my quad (muscle) back, my calf (muscle) back,” she said. “I’m encouraged to work hard. I have a lot of future to look forward to. I’m really just so excited to get to Columbia (S.C.) and start working.”

In the meantime, Wynn is taking statistics for Mater Dei during games. She also is reading a book that she received from her grandmother for Christmas.

The book is on South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley, who counts Wynn as her first high school recruit from California.

“I’m reading (the book) and I was, ‘Wow. I get to learn from this person,’ ” Wynn said of Staley. “I’m pushing myself to be with the best players, play against the best competition and be coached by the best coach in the nation.”
