IRVINE – Shorthanded, yet too tall.

Crean Lutheran’s boys basketball team played Tuesday night without 6-foot-7 forward Jacob Majok, but the Saints did have 6-11 Chadrack Mpoyi.

Mpoyi scored 25 points, many of those on gym-shaking dunks, as Crean Lutheran overwhelmed visiting Canyon 80-54 in the Crestview League opener for both teams.

Crean Lutheran, No. 2 in the Orange County Top 25, improved to 15-5 overall. No. 6 Canyon is 11-7.

Majok, a 6-7 senior who signed with UC Riverside, did not play because he is recovering from an ankle injury.

As Mpoyi said, Majok, who averages nine points and seven rebounds a game, is not easily replaced.

“Jacob was our MVP last year,” said Mpoyi, who signed with Minnesota. “He’s our leader, our captain.”

Mpoyi and 6-3 junior guard Hunter Caplan took charge in Majok’s absence.

Mpoyi shot 12 of 15 from the floor – one of his misses was a 3-point attempt – and Caplan was 6 of 7 on 3-pointers for 20 points. Caplan also had six assists.

Crean Lutheran’s Nick Giarrusso, a 6-5 junior wing, had nine rebounds and 10 assists. Saints senior Will Malual scored nine points with seven rebounds and also was a forceful defensive presence.

Crean’s quick inside-outside offense kept Canyon defenders scrambling.

“That was our focus for this game,” Mpoyi said.

Crean Lutheran dominated early. Taking advantage of Canyon’s seven turnovers in the first quarter, the Saints flew to a 21-1 lead. They took a 23-5 advantage into the second quarter.

Canyon is famous for its spirit, so of course the Comanches cut into their deficit. They outscored Crean 23-17 over a period that started in the first quarter and carried over into the second quarter. They trimmed the Saints’ lead to 11 points, but could not get closer.

The score was 38-24 at halftime.

In the third quarter Mpoyi, who averages 14 points a game, scored 11 points and Caplan made a pair of 3s to keep Crean Lutheran comfortably ahead. It was 59-40 going into the fourth quarter.

The Saints stretched the lead to 30 points in the final quarter.

Caplan, who averages 16 points a game, said getting Mpoyi more involved is a growing emphasis for Crean’s offensive structure. And, Caplan added, Mpoyi can offer more for the team.

“Even when he’s not scoring,” Caplan said, “just his impact of being here on the court. You see the dunks, his rebounding. And his defense, that’s another story.

“He makes all of our jobs way easier.”

The CIF Southern Section computer-created power rankings, which will determine the teams for each playoff division at the end of the regular season, have Crean Lutheran at No. 8 overall. Last season, the top 10 teams in the rankings were placed in the Open Division.

Canyon is No. 45 in the CIF-SS power rankings.

Senior guard Tate Dohrmann led Canyon with 15 points.

Crean Lutheran’s next game is a league game Friday at La Habra.

Canyon’s next game is a league game Friday at Foothill.

Also coming up for Canyon is a nonleague game at Intuit Dome on Monday against Esperanza.

Angel Stadium field turned into dirt racing track https://www.ocregister.com/2026/01/06/angel-stadium-field-turned-into-dirt-racing-track/ Tue, 06 Jan 2026 23:06:03 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=11341188&preview=true&preview_id=11341188 Before the lucious green outfield is shaped and manicured for the upcoming baseball season in Anaheim, it is being transformed by crews this week into a dirt pit.

Angel Stadium traditionally hosts AMA Monster Energy Supercross and Monster Jam events in January and February — a rip-roaring couple of weeks that require some 500 truckloads of dirt to be hauled in to cover the field of the stadium, with mounds formed to create giant ramps for the riders and drivers.

The rest of the year, the 5,500 cubic yards of dirt are kept nearby and used for employee parking.

Supercross motorcycles will kick off their off-road racing season at the stadium on Saturday, Jan. 10. The high-octane event starts with a FanFest from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fans can get autographs and watch as the teams prepare. The main racing starts after an opening ceremony at 3:30 p.m.

Monster Jam’s over-sized trucks will wheel into town for shows Jan.17-18, Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, and Feb. 21-22. It also offers a pit party; find out more at monsterjam.com.

Supercross will be back in Anaheim for more racing on Jan. 24; find out more at supercrosslive.com.

Drug dealer gets 15-year sentence for selling a fatal dose of fentanyl to a woman in Anaheim https://www.ocregister.com/2026/01/05/drug-dealer-gets-15-year-sentence-for-selling-a-fatal-dose-of-fentanyl-to-a-woman-in-anaheim/ Tue, 06 Jan 2026 05:20:45 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=11339652&preview=true&preview_id=11339652 SANTA ANA — A 36-year-old man was sentenced Monday to more than 15 years in federal prison for dealing a fatal dose of fentanyl to a 30-year-old woman in Anaheim.

U.S. District Judge James Selna sentenced Jesus Angel Reyna to 189 months behind bars and ordered him to pay $6,948.24 in restitution for funeral expenses to the victim’s parents.

Reyna met with the victim near her home in Anaheim on Oct. 28, 2022, and sold her several pills laced with fentanyl, federal prosecutors said in a sentencing brief. The woman took the pills two days later and died, prosecutors said.

Reyna had dealt drugs to the woman on prior occasions, prosecutors said.

Reyna was arrested Feb. 21, 2023, while dealing drugs in a parking lot of his apartment in Anaheim, prosecutors said. A search of his apartment netted 680 grams of methamphetamine, 457 grams of cocaine, 7.30 grams of MDMA and 23 grams of Xanax, prosecutors said.

He pleaded guilty Sept. 2 to possessing fentanyl with intent to distribute it and possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute it.

Disneyland fight leaves bloodied dad with stitches after ‘sucker punch’ https://www.ocregister.com/2026/01/05/disneyland-fight-leaves-bloodied-dad-with-stitches-after-sucker-punch/ Tue, 06 Jan 2026 03:25:51 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=11339590&preview=true&preview_id=11339590 A fight at Disneyland prompted by a dispute over line-cutting left a father visiting from Washington state with a bloody gash over his eye and his crying teenage daughter screaming “stop hitting my dad,” according to social media posts about the incident.

The Disneyland fight broke out on Dec. 30 just before 1 p.m. in the queue for the Indiana Jones Adventure dark ride at the Anaheim theme park.

“A group of people were waiting in line at Indiana Jones when another group cut through the line to catch up with other family members,” Anaheim Police Sgt. Matt Sutter told KTLA.

The Disneyland Guest Health Services team treated one of the two male guests involved in the physical altercation in the Indiana Jones Adventure queue, according to Disneyland officials.

A series of Reddit posts detailed the blow-by-blow of the Disneyland brawl.

The fight started when a “rude and disrespectful” family of six — two parents and four kids — cut through the line of Indiana Jones Adventure, according to Reddit user Appropriate-Cover846.

“It seems as if one guy was saying something snippy about them cutting through the line that caused the other guy to blindside him and start beating on him,” Appropriate-Cover846 wrote on Reddit.

Several Disneyland visitors tried to stop the assault that lasted about 30 seconds, according to Reddit user @ImaginaryBag1452.

“He managed to get some hits in even with people blocking,” @ImaginaryBag1452 wrote on Reddit. “Then he stepped back a bit so others did too. That’s when he jumped in for one last sucker punch, which drew blood.”

“It was incredibly traumatizing,” wrote Reddit user @Visible_General_8283. “The older man was covered in blood on his face.”

The line-cutter and his family ran off after the brief fight, according to @ImaginaryBag1452.

“Several people were able to point him out to security,” @ImaginaryBag1452 wrote on Reddit.

“Disney staff closed the line and sent staff to scrub blood off the floor in multiple spots,” wrote Reddit user @Visible_General_8283.

Disneyland gave the victim’s family free Lightning Lane passes for the rest of the day in the park and a voucher for a new shirt to replace the one that was “soaked in blood,” the wife wrote on Reddit.

The victim’s wife and 17-year-old daughter shared photos on Reddit of the injuries and said the man who received five stitches for the gash on his forehead was “perfectly okay” after the violent incident.

“My hubby is a solid rule follower,” the wife wrote on Reddit. “I told him it takes strength and tons of discipline not to swing back.”

The suspect and his family left Disneyland before officers arrived, according to Anaheim Police.

Anaheim Police have strong leads on the identity of the suspect who is believed to be a Southern California resident.

“If they find them, we plan to press charges,” the victim’s wife wrote on Reddit.

Anaheim bakery serves up tradition with Three Kings Day bread https://www.ocregister.com/2026/01/05/bakery-serves-up-tradition-with-three-kings-day-bread/ Mon, 05 Jan 2026 23:49:29 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=11339290&preview=true&preview_id=11339290

Panaderías around Southern California are busy baking Rosca de Reyes or Three Kings Day bread.

On Monday, dozens of the big rounds of bread rotated in the oven at Max’s Bakery in Anaheim. The shop will have filled hundreds of orders for the decorated breads for the Feast of the Epiphany, the Christian holiday on Jan. 6, which honors the biblical story of the three kings or wise men who brought gifts to the baby Jesus in the manger at Christmas.

As the bread is prepared, bakers hide small plastic figurines of the baby Jesus inside, signifying Jesus was born as his family was in hiding from King Herod. Finding the figurine in your slice of bread traditionally means you are tasked with hosting a party on Candlemas Day, Feb. 2.

Three Kings Day is commemorated by many Latinos and Catholics by attending Mass, giving gifts to children and breaking the traditional sweet bread.

Iwerks and her team discovered film reels of never-used 16 mm footage in the Disney vaults and produced high-resolution digital scans of the once-forgotten shots from the early days of Disneyland.

The documentary film will frame the building of Disneyland as the greatest gamble of Walt Disney’s life “to build a place the world had never dared to imagine.” His critics mocked the impossible opening day deadline and predicted a spectacular failure.

A two-minute trailer for “Disneyland Handcrafted” offers glimpses of what viewers can expect from the upcoming documentary film.

After a year of tremendous pressure, Disneyland opened on July 17, 1955 in front of a live TV audience of 90 million viewers, the largest in television history.

“It’s a miracle that Disneyland ever got opened,” according to the film’s narration.

United Way launches Workforce Accelerator Program to get more kids to graduate with future plans https://www.ocregister.com/2026/01/03/united-way-launches-workforce-accelerator-program-to-get-more-kids-to-graduate-with-future-plans/ Sat, 03 Jan 2026 18:19:45 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=11334673&preview=true&preview_id=11334673 A partnership between the Orange County United Way, the Anaheim Unified School District and the North Orange County Community College District is designed to provide high school juniors, many from underserved backgrounds, with a workable pathway toward a career.

The United Way’s newly launched Workforce Accelerator Program supports students in developing and implementing a personalized education and career plan, ranging from skilled trade and certification programs to earning two- and four-year college degrees.

Recognizing that not all students will pursue college, the program also introduces students to a variety of career paths and industries through partnerships with local businesses, unions and educational institutions, said Sergio Contreras, executive director of the nonprofit’s United for Student Success initiative.

The core mission of the initiative is to improve graduation rates by 2030, especially among at-risk students, ensuring they’re ready for college and careers.

“One thing that we’ve learned is that students can’t be what they can’t see,” Contreras said. “So, what we’ve been doing is … how do we take it one step further beyond just the exploration and create an experience for them.”

From the fall of their junior year to the fall of senior year, students can earn college credits through dual enrollment in high school and community college, participate in career workshops and paid internships, receive one-on-one career counseling and visit businesses.  A $500 scholarship is available upon completion of the program.

Before the winter break, about 160 juniors from Anaheim Union High School District campuses participated in a career connections day at Fullerton College with panel discussions featuring professionals from a variety of sectors: science, health and wellness, visual and performing arts, engineering, math and business communications.

“When United Way approached us about this program, we found it to be an obvious fit and really wanted to support this,” said Carlos Ayon, dean of business and computer information systems at Fullerton College. “For us, in looking at the 11th grade opportunity, it’s really to find a spark and get some hands-on experience and a career and hopefully when they come here to our college, they have a better-defined pathway.”

Aritzel Isidro is a junior at Savannah High School who is enrolled in the Workforce Accelerator Program, looking for insight into careers directly from professionals actually working in those fields.

“I’m already interested in healthcare,” Isidro said while on a break during the recent career connections event. “In the session that we just had, there was some professionals in healthcare that did share their stories and the hardships that you’re going to endure and the journey isn’t going to be the easiest, but you still have to persevere and keep going.”

The United Way initiative and its events, such as the career connections day, can provide valuable opportunities for students to make informed decisions about their futures, discovering new interests and building connections with business professionals, said MJ Cooke, who 11 years ago spearheaded the formation of Anaheim’s Innovative Mentoring Experience, or A.I.M., a multi-tiered career mentoring and internship program for students in high school district. More than 39,000 students have participated in AIM since its inception, Cooke said.

“We don’t want our students to engage in jobs,” said Cooke, whose role involves building partnerships with businesses. “We want them to pursue careers. There’s upward mobility.

“We also want our students to be able to experience every type of industry that’s out there,” Cooke added. “Because a student may think they know what they want to do, and in fact, they may realize that there’s something that inspires them that they think about.”
